International Experts to advise on an expanded Centre City cycle track network
Calgary, AB –Calgarians are invited to meet with leading international urban cycling experts next week to talk about the future of cycling in downtown Calgary.
The City is hosting a series of public sessions where Calgarians can meet with five renowned cycling experts from North America and Europe to discuss such topics as cycling culture and education and cycling best practices in major cities around the world. Calgarians are encouraged to attend any of the free workshops and open forums scheduled on June 18 and 19 at a number of downtown area venues.
The experts will also be holding a breakfast and workshop with local businesses to discuss bicycle friendly business districts. Businesses and business organizations are invited to register for these sessions.
City Transportation Engineer Blanka Bracic says the discussions will highlight the potential for a future east-west and north-south network of cycle tracks in the Centre City connecting to the 7 Street S.W. cycle track. The cycle track on 7 Street S.W. will open in the next few weeks.
“The cycle track network will give Calgarians a safe and convenient space to ride bicycles in and through the busy downtown core,” said Bracic. “There will be opportunities for conversations and open discussions with The City team and the experts at all these events.”
The feedback received at these sessions will be considered when the project team develops the vision and criteria for planning the Centre City cycle track network.
The City continues to look for opportunities to build more cycle tracks in the downtown core.
What is a cycle track?
A cycle track is an enhanced bike lane that is protected by a physical barrier from moving cars, parked cars and sidewalks. It provides a predictable space and minimizes potential conflicts between people who walk, bicycle and drive.
