City’s Surface Overlay Paving season comes to the beltline

Please be advised that City crews will begin pavement rehabilitation in the beltline area on May 1, 2013 with work continuing through to early July, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and in the evening hours. Three major road ways in this area will be affected by this year’s Surface Overlay Paving (SOL) program:

12 Avenue S.W. from 14 Street S.W. to MacLeod Trail,
1 Street S.E. from Pattison Bridge (south of 18 Avenue S.E.) to 9 Avenue S.E. and
MacLeod Trail from Victoria Bridge (south of 18 Avenue S.E.) to 9 Avenue S.E.

Parking and lane restrictions will be in effect on multiple streets in and around the area during construction. Single lane closures will occur during the day, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Multiple lane closures and side street closures will only occur during evenings and weekends, with Calgary Police Service on site for assistance. During this time there will be improvements to concrete curb, gutter and sidewalks in the area. Crews will set up signs indicating where pedestrians should cross to avoid the construction work.

Up-to-date traffic restrictions and detours regarding this construction work will be available at Calgary.ca/trafficinfo.

“No Parking” signs will be placed approximately 12 hours before parking restrictions begin. Transit routes along this road will maintain regular scheduled service during construction.

Regular maintenance and upgrading is an important part of improving the safety and extending the life-cycle of our roadways. When more extensive repair methods are required, pavement rehabilitation is carried out through pavement rehabilitation or the Surface Overlay Paving program.

Paving is prioritized based on specific guidelines for road conditions. Roads that experience high traffic volumes need proactive rehabilitation to maintain the safety of the road as well as increase its service life. Performing preventative construction can avoid hazards like potholes, cracks and frost heaves and lessen the need for continuous maintenance.
