City opens Cycle Track Pilot Network ahead of schedule, under budget

June 17, 2015 – Calgary, AB – The final sections of the cycle track network pilot project will be open to the public the morning of Thursday, June 18, 2015.

“We are pleased to announce that the entire cycle track network pilot will be open tomorrow, nearly two weeks ahead of schedule, largely thanks to good weather,” said Don Mulligan, Director of Transportation Planning for the City of Calgary. “We are also pleased to say that the project was completed under budget. We had projected a budget of $7.1 million, and the final cost is $5.75 million – $1.35 million under budget.”

Work will be completed on the 8 Avenue and 9 Avenue pilot cycle tracks, as well on Stephen Avenue and the Olympic Plaza block today. Calgarians can begin using the network in its entirety tomorrow morning.

Bike riding is now allowed in both directions on Stephen Avenue all hours of the day. Stephen Avenue is now a shared space for people walking and cycling in the daytime, with no physical barrier on the street.   Vehicles and bicycles will share the road in the evenings, with cars allowed west-bound on Stephen Avenue in the evenings only. Please note that cyclists will be required to walk their bikes between 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. from July 1 through July 12 to accommodate high volumes of people on the avenue during Canada Day and Stampede.

The City appreciates your patience throughout the construction of the pilot project and while we all adjust to the new roadway. Please remember to watch for new signs, signals and pavement markings. Be understanding and courteous to one another as we all get used to the changes on the roadway.

We want to hear from you on how things are working. Whether you drive, walk or cycle, please contact 311 with your questions and feedback.
