City crews fight off snow to maintain our roads

The snow started early this morning with Calgary getting an estimated 15 centimetres of snow in less than 12 hours. The City of Calgary’s Roads crews have been busy working on maintaining Priority 1 routes; these are routes that carry more than 20,000 vehicles per day like Macleod Trail, Crowchild Trail and Centre Street.

Despite the recent snowfall, crews have managed to maintain all major thoroughfares and will continue to sustain those routes with a focus on turning lanes, on and off ramps, bus routes, bridge decks and known trouble spots.

Crews will work overnight and into Sunday as part of The City’s 24 hour Snow and Ice Control Maintenance plan.  The plan is part of The City’s efforts to keep you moving safely by following a Council-approved seven day snow and ice control (SNIC) plan.

According to Environment Canada, the snow is forecasted to end tonight with a slight rise in temperature accompanied by light flurries tomorrow, allowing our crews to clear snow and ice of roads in time for Monday’s morning commute.

Drivers are reminded to drive according to the conditions and to take the following steps before beginning their commute: 

  • Clean snow and ice off your vehicle and ensure your lights and your windows are clear.
  • Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
  • Reduce your speed and turn on your headlights.
  • Drive defensively.
  • Leave extra distance between you and the car ahead of you.
  • When road conditions are difficult, consider using Calgary Transit.
  • Consider delaying your trip until the roads are in better condition.
