Calgary Transit Purchases 150 New Buses

Calgary Transit has placed an order with New Flyer Industries for 150 new 40-foot, heavy-duty, clean diesel buses. These new buses will be used to replace some of the buses in Calgary Transit’s aging fleet and to support increasing ridership on the transit system.

 

"With transit ridership steadily increasing year-over-year, there is a great need for us to increase reliability by replacing older buses and improve accessibility with more low-floor buses, while continuing to provide our customers with safe and courteous public transportation services,” said Calgary Transit Director Doug Morgan.

 

New Flyer has built and delivered 653 buses for Calgary Transit in the last 20 years, with the majority of these buses using a diesel propulsion system. The new buses are more environmentally friendly than the old diesel buses, and will help Calgary Transit reach the directives of its RouteAhead 30-year strategic plan to replace vehicles that are past their retirement age.

 

“These new buses will help fill that need and we’re excited to have them start servicing routes around our city. We have a solid fleet plan and the budget in place to support this purchase,” Morgan said.

 

Production of the 150 new buses is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2013. They will be completely manufactured and assembled at New Flyer’s St. Cloud, Minnesota manufacturing facility.  The first bus is expected to arrive in Calgary in December 2013.

 

All buses are expected to be delivered by the end of 2014.

 

Calgary Transit currently has 1,100 buses in its bus fleet.
