Calgary Police Service to Participate in Second Global Police Tweet-a-Thon

For the second time this year, the Calgary Police Service will join forces with other law enforcement agencies across the globe for a 24-hour tweet-a-thon. The event is meant to raise awareness about the use of social media by law enforcement, as well as issues faced in policing.

The March 2013 event involved more than 15,500 Twitter users and produced more than 48,000 tweets using the #poltwt hashtag.

“We have participation from agencies in New Zealand and Kenya, all over Europe, Canada and the U.S.," said Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications and organizer of the Global Police Tweet-a-thon. "We’re calling attention to the great police work being done globally as well as connecting cops around the world.”

The CPS had one of the most active accounts in the last tweet-a-thon, sending more than 200 tweets during the one-day event. The @calgarypolice account was also the most mentioned and a tweet featuring one of Service’s Canine Unit dogs was one of the most popular posts.

With more than 48,000 followers, the CPS Twitter account has become a go-to destination for citizens looking for real-time information and answers.

The tweet-a-thon begins at 8 a.m., on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 and continues until 8 a.m., the following day. The CPS will be participating from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the Service’s Facebook account will also be updated throughout the event.

Participants will again use the #poltwt hashtag.
