Calgary Police Commission Extends Chief of Police’s Employment Contract

 

Calgary (Sep 24, 2010) - As a result of the strong leadership shown in fulfilling his duties, the Calgary Police Commission is pleased to announce that it has unanimously agreed to extend the employment contract term of Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson. Chief Hanson’s contract extension will expire September 30, 2018.

 

Chief Hanson’s initial contract term was set as October 1, 2007 through to September 30, 2012, with the first extension, until September 30, 2015, granted in November 2010. The Calgary Police Commission felt it important to secure a contract extension at this time, prior to the end of the current contract, to ensure continuity of policing in Calgary, as well as the continued leadership of Chief Hanson heading into the upcoming business plan development and implementation.

 

“It is with great pleasure that I stand before you today to announce that the Calgary Police Commission has extended Chief Rick Hanson’s employment contract,” said Mike Shaikh, Chair of the Calgary Police Commission. “Since his arrival as Chief in Calgary in late 2007, Chief Hanson has strengthened the reputation of the Calgary Police Service, locally, nationally and internationally. His leadership and innovation have improved policing in our city and set the standard for other police services across this country.”

 

His Worship, Mayor Naheed Nenshi, said, “Crime statistics in Calgary are the lowest we’ve seen in a generation, and that is due, in large part, to Chief Hanson’s amazing leadership. We’re lucky to have him, and I am thrilled that he is willing to stay with us. I look forward to working with him in the future to ensure the safety and well-being of all Calgarians.”

 

In response to news of his contract extension, Chief Hanson stated, “I am very appreciative of the support of the Police Commission, the Mayor and the Calgary Police Association to be able to carry on the job at hand.”

 

“This contract extension is great for the City of Calgary and the members of the Calgary Police Service. It will allow Chief Hanson to see the outcomes of his hard work and dedication to keeping the citizens of Calgary safe, as well as ensure continuity and stability in the policing of our city. We look forward to Chief Hanson’s continued drive to improve our city and get results in crime prevention and enforcement, as well as the positive development of our children and our communities,” said Chairman Mike Shaikh.

 

The Calgary Police Commission provides civilian oversight to the Calgary Police Service. Under the Police Act the Calgary Police Commission establishes policies to provide for efficient and effective policing; in consultation with the chief of police, allocates funds provided by City Council; and monitors the complaint process.
