Water Rescue

The Calgary Police Service is thanking the quick actions of a citizen and two officers for saving the life of a woman earlier today. 

 

Just before noon today, Sunday, March 30, 2014, a man noticed a woman fall through the ice at Elliston Park after attempting to reach her dog, who had also fallen through the ice. The quick thinking citizen tied a rope around his waist and made his way out into the body of water to reach the woman. At the same time, a CPS on-duty member was driving past the area and saw what was happening. 

 

By the time the citizen reached the woman, she was too numb from the freezing water to be able to grasp the rope. The man then secured the rope around both of them. 

 

At the same time, the officer began pulling the two of them in, when a second officer arrived on scene and waded into the water and was able to assist in pulling everyone to shore. 

 

The woman was transported to hospital for hypothermia, while the citizen and the officers were treated at the scene and released. 

 

The woman's dog managed to make it safely to shore on it's own. 

 

Alternating temperatures create dangerous conditions on bodies of water. Calgarians are asked to please stay off the ice and avoid the banks of bodies of water.
