Unintentional firearm discharge

The Calgary Police Service is investigating after a police shotgun was unintentionally discharged today.

At approximately 6 a.m., a man called police to report that an assault was in progress in a southeast Calgary house, and that there may have been firearms in the residence.

The address was not immediately clear, however, CPS members were able to locate a house in the 1800 block of 41 Street S.E.

Because of potential firearms present, the home was contained.

Three people exited the home, but it was believed there were others inside.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., a five-year CPS member who was outside of the home unintentionally discharged his shotgun. One shot was fired into the ground.

There were no injuries.

Two other people exited the house and were taken into custody.

Officers entered the residence to ensure it was empty. Several items were seized.

In total, nine people who were coming and going from the home were taken into custody. Three were wanted on outstanding warrants and breaches, and another faces charges after drugs were found in her possession.

As is standard in cases of unintentional discharge of firearms by Service members, the Homicide Unit was called, and will support the Administrative Review conducted by the Professional Standards Section.

The Administrative Review will determine the cause of the discharge, and examine whether policies, training practices and administrative processes need to be changed.

During this review, the weapon will also be thoroughly examined.
