Telephone Scam

Following reports of a potential phone scam, the Calgary Police Service is reminding the public that it never solicits for money in person or otherwise.

 

On Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, an elderly man who lives in the northeast community of Vista Heights, began receiving calls from a private telephone number. The man ignored more than a dozen of these calls throughout the day, answering only once. The caller told the man he was a CPS detective and claimed he required a large sum of money to resolve a case involving criminal activity on the victim’s computer.

 

After the victim hung up the phone, he contacted the Calgary Police Service who sent an officer to his home. While the officer was at the home, the same private number called again and the constable picked up the line. The offender briefly talked with the officer before hanging up the phone.

 

The Calgary Police Service does not solicit donations for programs or for any other reason, and people are asked to report any similar calls.

 

Victims are asked to capture as much information as possible about the caller, including any numbers that may be visible on call display.
