Stolen Vehicle Incident

One woman has been transported to hospital, and a man remains in custody following the dangerous flight of a stolen vehicle down Deerfoot Trail.

At approximately 2:20 a.m., on Sunday, July 28, 2013, officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle near Deerfoot Trail and Freeport Boulevard N.E. Officers confronted a man and a woman as they got into a 2005 Dodge Caravan.

The minivan fled the area and began to drive southbound on Deerfoot Trail in the northbound lanes.

Police monitored the fleeing vehicle and it was determined the vehicle caused significant risk to the public. Officers then attempted to block the stolen vehicle by using CPS vehicles.

The minivan rammed a number of police vehicles in an attempt to flee again, but was immobilized.

An officer in one of the rammed police vehicles believed the driver posed an immanent threat and discharged his Service-issued firearm. No one was injured as a result.

The Calgary Fire Department was called to help extricate the female passenger from the vehicle. She was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The male driver has been taken into custody.

As is standard procedure when a member fires their weapon, the CPS Major Crimes Section is investigating.
