On Saturday, September 14, 2013, at approximately 11:15 AM, an SUV vs. cyclist collision occurred at the intersection of 36th Street and Erin Woods Boulevard S.E. that resulted in serious injuries.
A 1996 Chevrolet Blazer, driven by a 27 year old male, was westbound on Erin Woods Boulevard S.E. The Blazer approached the 36th Street S.E. intersection, which was controlled by traffic lights. An 8 year old was riding his bicycle southbound on the sidewalk on the east side of 36th Street S.E. The Blazer commenced a right-hand turn onto northbound 36th Street after stopping at a red light. The Blazer struck the cyclist crossing Erin Woods Boulevard in the crosswalk southbound from the northeast corner of the intersection to the southeast corner. The cyclist was knocked to the ground and pushed approximately 7.0 metres. The Blazer came to rest on top of the cyclist half way through its right-hand turn onto 36th Street S.E.
The cyclist sustained serious injuries.
The driver of the Blazer was not injured.
The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating the incident. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision. Any witnesses to the accident or the events leading up to it are asked to contact the Traffic Section at 403-567-4000.
