SERIOUS INJURY COLLISION 9200 Blackfoot Trail SE

At approximately 23:16hrs, on Saturday March 22nd 2014, a fatal motor vehicle collision occurred in the 9200 block of Blackfoot Trail SE.

 

A 19 year old male was driving a silver Acura Integra bearing Alberta license plate BMK8004, southbound along Blackfoot Trail.  The vehicle contained 3 other male occupants, aged 17, 17 and 15 years of age. The weather conditions were poor, the roadway was snow covered, with light snow continuing to fall.

The vehicle was being driven at high rate of speed and the driver was passing other vehicles, changing lanes back and forth as he did so.

 

Following an overtake maneuverer; the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered into a clockwise yaw rotation. The vehicle left the roadway to the right (west), and travelled across the median, driver’s side leading. The vehicle struck a sign post mounted on the median.

         

Extensive intrusion occurred at the driver’s door. The impact moved the concrete blocks to which the sign was attached. Post impact with the sign post the vehicle was rotated approximately 180° clockwise, and came to rest approximately 6 meters south of the impact with the sign post.

 

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other passengers were extricated by emergency personnel and transported to the Foothills Medical Centre and to the South Calgary Campus. The 3 passengers were reported to be in a stable condition.

 

Excessive speed is considered a factor in this collision.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this collision.
