Police Targeting Unsafe Transportation of Goods

Beginning this weekend, the Calgary Police Service will be targeting drivers unsafely transporting goods to local landfills.

Along with enforcement, officers will be on location at the Spyhill Landfill at 11808 69 St. N.W., to educate the public and commercial truck drivers about the hazards of unsecure loads, not having vehicles in proper working order, and not having appropriate permits.

Each year, the Service receives complaints from drivers of debris being blown from trucks and other vehicles, especially those on the way to a landfill. As a result, vehicles are damaged and in some cases, collisions are caused. In many cases, if the offending driver is located and pulled over by officers, it is determined the vehicles are in violation of the rules and are not in proper working order.

Starting Saturday, May 24, 2014, officers will be enforcing commercial vehicles and equipment regulations involving trucks and cars transporting to the Spyhill Landfill.  The fine for not completely covering loose material is $500, while allowing loose material to escape from a vehicle is $150. Having an insecure load can result in a $345 fine.

Commercial vehicles must have the proper documentation, including decals, permits and when asked, are required to produce an up-to-date logbook.
