Police lay charges in unlawful confinement incident

The Calgary Police Service has charged three men in relation to an incident in which a man was held against his will over the weekend.

At approximately 2 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, the 18-year-old victim and his male friend were invited to the home of a man they had met earlier in the evening at a casino, located in the 400 block of 12 Avenue S.E. The men hailed a cab in the area of MacLeod Trail and 25 Avenue S. En route, the victim’s friend exited the taxi.

Upon arrival at a residence in the N.W., one of the suspects and the victim were joined by two other male suspects.

On Saturday morning, the victim’s friend who had exited the taxi the previous evening, began to receive numerous text and voicemail messages from the victim’s phone asking for money or the victim would be injured. The victim’s friend contacted police. The friend was told to bring money to an address in the 8000 block of Beddington Blvd. N.W. or his friend would be injured.

After an extensive investigation, the victim was located at a residence in the 200 block of Sandstone Drive N.W. The TAC team forced entry into the residence and two men were taken into custody. A third suspect was taken into custody near the 8000 block of Beddington Blvd. N.W.

The victim was taken to hospital in serious, but non-life threatening condition.

Maldini AMADOU, 19, Edward Gicheru MUTHONI, 21, and Ruslan DOVJENKO, 21, all of Calgary, are each charged with one count of forcible confinement, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and extortion.

AMADOU, MUTHONI and DOVJENKO are next scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015.
