Police investigating fatal pedestrian collision

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating a fatal collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian late last night.

At approximately 11 p.m., on Thursday, August 20, 2015, a Toyota RAV 4 was driving westbound along 130 Avenue S.E.  At the intersection of 48 Street S.E., the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was crossing the avenue.

The pedestrian, a male in his early 60s, was transported to Foothills Medical Centre where he later died. The driver of the RAV 4 was uninjured.

The intersection is normally controlled by traffic signals, however at the time of the collision the signals were flashing yellow for traffic along 130 Avenue S.E. and red for traffic along 48 Street S.E.  Visibility was also limited by street lights not being on in the area and heavy rain. Police are investigating whether these were contributing factors.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in this collision.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing and any witnesses who have not already spoken to police are asked to contact the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section at 403-567-4000.
