Police Investigate Fatal Crash
The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section is investigating a fatal crash that occurred overnight.
At approximately 1:40 a.m., on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of 68 Street and 26 Avenue N.E.
Two vehicles were seen racing southbound on 68 Street near 32 Avenue N.E., by a marked police unit. The officers activated their emergency equipment and made a U-turn in an effort to stop the two cars.
A VW Jetta immediately pulled over, while a Honda Accord continued at a high rate of speed southbound. The driver of the Accord lost control and struck a pole at the intersection of 26 Avenue N.E.
A 24-year-old passenger in the front seat of the Accord was killed instantly. Three female passengers from the rear of the Accord were transported to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The 21-year-old male driver of the Accord sustained minor injuries. He refused to provide a breath sample pursuant to a breath demand.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in this collision. Charges are pending.
