Police investigate early morning incidents in southeast Calgary

The Calgary Police Service is investigating incidents at two separate locations that occurred this morning.

At approximately 5:50 a.m., on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, police were called to a business in the 7600 block of Blackfoot Trail S.E. They discovered a vehicle had backed into the building, causing some damage, before fleeing the area. Units quickly contained the scene.

It is not believed access was gained to the building.

An abandoned truck was located several blocks away. Investigators are working to determine if this truck was involved in the incident.

While at the scene, officers located a suspicious item in an area near the building.

The CPS Tactical Unit responded, securing the area and rendering it safe. The recovered item is being examined at this time. It is not currently known if the item is related to the vehicle backing into the building.

Due to this incident, both directions of Blackfoot Trail were temporarily closed between Heritage Drive S.E. and Glenmore Trail S.E., for precautionary reasons.

Officers later responded to another incident, however, it is not known at this time if it is related to the earlier call.

At approximately 6:20 a.m., police responded to an alarm call at a building in the 8200 block of 31 Street S.E.

Upon arrival, officers determined the building had not been broken into, but in the parking lot, they discovered an item that appeared to be suspicious.

The area was immediately cordoned off, while the CPS Tactical Unit responded. The area was rendered safe and the recovered item is currently being examined. It is not known if it is related to the alarm call.

While it is not known whether these incidents are related, officers from the Centralized General Investigations Section have been assigned to investigate these incidents.

These investigations are in their very early stages, and no further information is available at this time.
