Ongoing Homicide Investigation - Update #2
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner continues to conduct autopsies on the victims of Tuesday’s homicide in Brentwood.
While it was originally anticipated the examinations may have been completed today, the official process will not done until Thursday. It is expected the names of the victims will be released at that time.
The Calgary Police Service was advised Wednesday, the prosecution of the case will be handled out of the Edmonton Crown Prosecutor’s Office. This was done to address any perceived conflict of interest in the prosecution of the case.
Members of the Service’s Forensic Crime Scene Unit continue to collect evidence at the scene of the homicide on Butler Crescent N.W., and there is a potential their work at the home may continue until at least Saturday, April 19, 2014.
The accused in this case, Matthew de Grood, has been transported from a local hospital to the Calgary Remand Centre until his next court appearance on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
Detectives are working closely with the families of the five victims, who have declined to comment publicly. They have asked for privacy during this difficult time. The Service will assist the families should they wish to make a statement at a later date.
Due to the large number of media requests we are currently receiving, individual interviews are not available at this time.
Media will be advised of scheduled news conferences.
Media calls should be directed to the Media Line at 403-428-7979, however, no further updates are available at this time.
