Nighttime car prowlings and break-ins

The Calgary Police Service is reminding Calgarians to secure their vehicles and residences after several incidents of nighttime car prowlings and break-ins.

In many of these cases, thieves have taken garage door openers from both locked and unlocked vehicles parked on the street, in order to access a garage.

Offenders have removed items from garages, and in some cases they have entered unlocked doors from a garage to a house, to steal household items while residents are asleep.

In other cases, entry to homes has been gained through unlocked doors and windows.

These incidents can occur anywhere in the city, however, the CPS has noticed recent trends over the last month in the northwest, including Tuscany, Evanston, Panorama Hills and Sage Hills, and south Calgary, including Chaparral, Copperfield and Bridlewood.
 
Calgarians are reminded to lock vehicle doors, whether they are parked on the street or garage, and to ensure all doors and windows to the residence and garage locked.

Don’t leave items in plain view in your vehicle and remove your garage door remote. Consider installing an aftermarket car alarm if your vehicle is not already equipped with one.

Incidents should be reported immediately by calling 403-266-1234. Always call 911 to report a crime in progress.
