Homicide investigation
The death of a man who was found in a vehicle earlier this week has been declared a homicide.
At approximately 9:40 a.m., on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, police responded to a location in the 100 block of 28 Avenue N.E. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of a man in a vehicle. The circumstances appeared suspicious so the Homicide Unit was called in to lead the investigation.
An autopsy completed yesterday, identified the man as Duane Gordon LAYBOURNE, 42, of Calgary, and determined the manner of death to be homicide. The cause of his death is not being released at this time.
Investigators have been able to determine that LAYBOURNE’s death is related to an incident at a residence in the area the evening before.
Police were called to the home at approximately 9 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, after receiving calls of possible gunshots.
At the same time, police also received a 911 call from residents of a house in the area, saying they had arrived home to find their house had possibly been broken into. However, when officers arrived, the man and woman who called weren’t there.
A search of the home revealed blood on the inside walls and a gun was found on the front lawn.
The subsequent investigation has revealed that a group of acquaintances had gathered at the home that evening. An altercation took place within the residence. One man sustained life-threatening injuries and fled the residence.
He was discovered deceased in the vehicle the next day.
This homicide is believed to be drug-related. No one is currently in custody. Investigators are still working to identify and locate everyone who was in the home at the time of the incident.
