Man Charged with Arson

The Calgary Police Service Arson Unit has charged one person in relation to multiple fires in southwest Calgary.

Between Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, and Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, the CPS and Calgary Fire Department responded to 20 reported fires within the community of Lakeview. During that time period, the community was being targeted by an individual lighting a series of fires in an apartment building and in alleyways.

Most of the fires were contained to residential and commercial garbage bins resulting in property damage, however the fires were a large stress on residents. On one occasion a newspaper was lit and pushed through the mail slot of a manager’s suite inside a four story apartment building. Luckily, a security guard was inside the suite and was able to extinguish the fire before anyone was hurt.

On Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, Sean STAMBOLTAS, 25, of Calgary, was arrested by investigators in the CPS Arson Unit. A subsequent investigation determined that STAMBOLTAS was also responsible for another fire in the community of Rundle. He has been charged with four counts of arson – endangering human life, 18 counts of arson – property damage and four counts of falsely activating a fire alarm.

STAMBOLTAS next court date is Thursday, March 12, 2015.

The Service would like to thank the residents of Lakeview for their cooperation and patience throughout this investigation.
