Man Charged in Connection with Carjacking

The Calgary Police Service has charged a local man in connection with a northeast robbery.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, police were called to Sunridge Mall, 2525 32 St. N.E., for an attempted carjacking.

It’s alleged the accused attempted to steal several cars by threatening people who were getting in to or out of their cars in the parking lot. At one point, several citizens confronted the offender, who then pepper sprayed the group in an attempt to escape.

He ran into the mall and was again confronted by security staff that followed him back out into the parking lot where the offender again attempted to open several car doors, including one with a woman and her daughter inside. Security staff was able to hold the accused until police arrived, where he was arrested.

Carmen Lawrence BRIAULT, 40, of no fixed address in Calgary, has been charged with two counts each of assault with a weapon, robbery and possession of stolen property, and one count of possession of a weapon or imitation for a dangerous purpose.
