Man charged in assault on taxi driver

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man in relation to the assault of a taxi driver earlier this year.

At approximately 4 p.m., on Sunday, April 18, 2015, a taxi driver picked up two men in the 2200 block of Centre Street North and drove them to the downtown area. During their trip, the two men suddenly wanted to exit the cab and the driver pulled over in the area of 6 Avenue and 1 Street S.W. to accommodate their request.

The front passenger then open-hand slapped the driver’s face, and tore off the HD dashboard camera. Both men ran from the cab without paying for the fare.

Although the cab driver suffered only minor injuries, there was significant damage to the camera, costing the driver several hundred dollars for repair.

On Sunday, July 26, 2015, Jeffrey Thomas GASSON, 32, of Calgary, was arrested in northwest Calgary without incident. He has been charged with assault, mischief to property and transportation fraud. GASSON will next appear in court on Monday, Sept. 14, 2015.
