Man Charged in Apartment Fire

The Calgary Police Service Arson Unit has charged a man in relation to a fire at an apartment building yesterday.

At approximately 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, emergency services attended an apartment building in the 800 block of Glenmore Trail S.W. for reports of a fire. Building residents were evacuated and one tenant was taken to hospital as a precaution due to smoke inhalation.

Total damage as a result of the fire is estimated at $200,000.

Following an investigation by the Arson Unit, it is believed a man intentionally set fire to a suite belonging to a woman living in the building.

Orrie Dewhyte HEWSON, 35, has been charged with arson – threat to human life, and two counts of arson – damage to property. He will next appear in court on Monday, Nov. 17, 2014.
