Investigators appeal for help in 2012 homicide

Nearly one year after the death of a Calgary man, investigators are appealing for further public assistance to find the person responsible.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., on Saturday, March 17, 2012, police responded to reports of an altercation inside the Sunset and Vine Pub at 2220 68 St. N.E. Upon arrival, a man was found in medical distress, suffering from apparent stab wounds. The man died at the scene.

Witness accounts indicate that the victim, Mario Alberto GOMEZ, 23, was standing inside the bar when he became involved in an altercation with another man, believed to be in his 20s. GOMEZ was stabbed and the offender quickly left the bar, along with a group of friends.

Approximately 25 witnesses were transported to police headquarters for questioning that evening. All were co-operative with police.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, 6’ tall with short hair. It is believed he is approximately 20 to 25 years old.

In July 2012, police released photographs and videos from the scene, in an effort to identify several people who may have information about the homicide. The public has come forward with information and investigators have been able to identify some of the individuals.

However, investigators are still hoping to identify two men in attendance at the pub that night. Their photographs are available on the City of Calgary Newsroom.

Police do not believe this was a random attack, however, no motive has been established.
