Incident Involving Dog

The Calgary Police Service is currently investigating after an officer shot an aggressive dog following a traffic stop in the northeast.

 

At approximately 8 p.m., a CPS Traffic Section member was conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle alleged to have been speeding, when she became suspicious about the occupants' activity. The officer called for backup and an officer from District 4 arrived at the scene in the 1400 block of 52 Street N.E.

 

At some point during the stop, one of three dogs in the suspect vehicle jumped out of an open window and lunged at the second officer, biting his abdomen. The member pulled his Service-issued weapon and fired at the animal, striking it in the head area. The dog ran from the area and was later tracked down and transported to a nearby veterinary clinic. Its injuries are unknown at this time.

 

The member who was bitten was wearing a protective vest and was uninjured.

 

As is standard procedure when a member fires their weapon, the CPS Major Crimes Section is investigating.

 

The investigation into the initial traffic stop is continuing.
