Hit and Run Injury Collision

At approximately 0330 hours on Saturday March 16, 2013, there was a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of 8 St X 8 Av SW between a dark green 2002 Dodge Caravan and a 2003 4 door Mitsubishi sedan.

The Dodge minivan fled the scene with the Mitsubishi following eastbound on 8 Av SW. The Dodge minivan stopped for a traffic light at 6 St SW. The driver of the Mitsubishi confronted the driver of the Dodge minivan. The driver of the Mitsubishi attempted to stop the driver of the minivan by reaching into the van. At this point the driver of the dodge minivan drove away northbound on 6 St SW accelerating rapidly with the male hanging out of the minivan driver side window.

Witnesses report the minivan was driving rapidly when it attempted to swerve around a truck near 7 Av SW before veering across all lanes of traffic on 6 St SW and onto the west sidewalk.

The vehicle collided with the building just south of 6 Av SW and the male hanging out of the vehicle was caught between the van and the wall of the building. The building was also damaged. The vehicle came to rest on the west sidewalk facing north.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 28 year old Calgary man, sustained critical life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

The driver of the Dodge minivan, a 43 year old male was taken into police custody.

While the Calgary Police Service recognizes the heat of the moment in this circumstance, we would like to take this opportunity to remind people to always be safe. It may be more prudent to call Police with whatever information you have and let us deal with the offender rather than exposing yourself to the risk of serious injury or worse.
