Alberta Hate Crimes Committee (AHCC) proclaims April 9, 2014 as Hate Crimes Awareness Day

The Alberta Hate Crimes Committee proclaims Wednesday April 9, 2014, as Hate Crimes Awareness Day with the theme “Take Action” in support of the ninth annual National Victims of Crime Awareness Week from April 6 to 12, 2014. This is the fifth annual Hate Crime Awareness Day in Alberta.

Hate crime is a “message crime” designed to strike fear and/or terror into the heart of a community. These types of crimes marginalize human rights, erode multiculturalism, subjugate equality and are oppressive to society as a whole. Let’s be a national leader in our response to hate and together make Alberta a hate-free province.

Hate Crime Awareness Day invites communities, governments and police to unite together to send the message that hate crimes will not be tolerated.

We invite you to help us mark this important day which is being celebrated across Alberta.

In Calgary, an event sponsored by the AHCC will be held on Wednesday April 9, 2014, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., on the main floor of the W.R. Castell Central Library, 616 Macleod Tr. S.E.

The Alberta Hate Crimes Committee (AHCC) was formed in 2002 to develop a province-wide framework to support a collaborative and integrated approach to prevent, enforce, and respond to hate and bias motivated activities in Alberta. AHCC members include government and community sectors who work together to reduce the number of hate and bias crimes in Alberta.

AHCC members have seen and fully recognize the negative impact of prejudice, discrimination, racism and hate crime.  AHCC's work is the call for action to make Alberta a hate-free province. The AHCC gratefully acknowledges support from The Calgary Public Library and the Alberta Human Rights, Education and Multiculturalism Fund.
