Five charged with fraud-related offences

The Calgary Police Service Economic Crimes Unit has charged five people in connection with the making of counterfeit licenses and Canadian social insurance cards. The group is also alleged to have manufactured fake federal government cheques.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, District 1 officers responded to a call from downtown hotel after management reported a room was booked with a stolen credit card. When officers arrived at the room, they discovered several counterfeit driver’s licenses from the province of Quebec, as well as bogus social insurance cards.

Numerous counterfeit blank Government of Canada cheques were also located along with equipment suspected of being used to manufacture the fake documentation.

Dozens of credit and debit cards alleged to have been obtained from identity theft were also found in possession of the suspects.

The investigation into how the credit and debit cards were obtained is ongoing by members of the Economic Crimes Unit. The accused are from Quebec and Ontario.

Anatoli TCHEBAKOV, 32, of Saint Remi, Nene BARRY, 18, of Laval, Nandy VEDERBER, 18, of Montreal, Herve Kabasele BAKALWA, 25, of Montreal, and Patrick Buama MAFUTA, 25, of Ottawa, are charged with approximately 40 fraud-related offences.
