Fatal pedestrian collision
A woman has died following a collision that occurred earlier today between a vehicle and a pedestrian.
At approximately 12:40 p.m., on Thursday Feb. 13, 2014, a collision occurred at the intersection of 10 Avenue S.W. and 5 Street S.W.
At that time a white 2007 Chevrolet Express Van was travelling southbound along 5 Street S.W. on the approach to the intersection with 10 Ave S.W. The van proceeded into the intersection with a green light and then made a turn, westbound, onto 10 Avenue S.W. At this intersection, pedestrian traffic is controlled by a light controlled crosswalk. The light for pedestrian traffic was white, allowing pedestrians to cross 10 Avenue S.W.
A pedestrian, a 39-year-old woman, was in the crosswalk approximately three metres from the north curb when the collision occurred. She was dragged under the vehicle for a short distance before coming to a stop.
The pedestrian was treated by emergency crews at the scene however had suffered critical injuries during the collision and was transported from the scene to the Foothills Medical Centre where she was later pronounced deceased.
The Calgary Police Traffic Section is investigating this incident. At this time alcohol or speed is not considered a factor in this collision.
