Entries are now being accepted for The City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize, one of the awards given as part of The Calgary Awards. The Awards are The City’s official awards program that recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions by individuals and organizations in the community.

The City of Calgary established the W.O. Mitchell Book Prize in honour of the late Calgary writer W.O. Mitchell to recognize literary achievement by Calgary authors. The $5,000 prize is awarded each year for an outstanding book published in the preceding award year. The 2015 recipient was Eugene Stickland for the book titled, The Piano Teacher.

A shortlist of authors and the book prize recipient will be announced in the spring of 2017.

The City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize is administered through a partnership between The City of Calgary and the Writers Guild of Alberta.

The City of Calgary established the Calgary Awards in 1994 to celebrate and recognize outstanding achievements and contributions made by Calgarians. Each year, individuals, corporations, community groups, and organizations are nominated in 5 major award categories. The deadline for nominations for the remainder of the Calgary Awards is March 1, 2017.
