CPS Student Police Academy

Grade 12 students representing Calgary and area schools will get a first-hand look at policing during the annual Student Police Academy on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Heritage Park.

Students will experience many facets of policing during the action packed day.

Participants will take part in real-life scenarios dealing with a variety of situations, from domestic conflict to impaired driving. They will learn about crime scenes, surveillance and crowd control under the guidance of an experienced officer, and will complete an obstacle course, not unlike what is used in training.

Participants will also be taught the importance of verbal communications, using conflict resolution and arbitration skills as an alternative to force, which are key skills in policing.

The Calgary Police Service’s School Resource Officer Program, which helps coordinate the Student Police Academy, seeks to develop a positive rapport with youth and the school community. This event is made possible with contributions from Heritage Park, Calgary Co-op and Peter’s Drive In.
