City's Parks gives dog owners the scoop on dog poop

Calgary, AB - The City of Calgary Parks will launch its annual P.U.P.P.Y. Program (Pick Up Pooch’s Poo Yourself) this Saturday, April 26, at River Park in the city’s southwest.

The P.U.P.P.Y. Program provides opportunities for citizens to learn about the importance of picking up and disposing pet waste to ensure our parks stay healthy and clean for all Calgarians.

“The P.U.P.P.Y. Program teaches Calgarians that to maintain a healthy environment in our parks and green spaces, they need to clean up after their dogs,” says Kym McCulley, Parks Leader of Environmental and Education Initiatives. “There are over 120,000 dogs in the city. We love that Calgarians are so passionate about their pets; however, it’s important to remember that dog waste is toxic and doesn’t simply wash away. To stop the spread of parasites and bacteria, it’s crucial to pick up after your pet.”

P.U.P.P.Y. events occur throughout the city from April to October. Parks and Animal & Bylaw Services staff will be on hand to share information on a variety of park-and pet-related topics, and supplies will be available for community residents to 'pitch in and pick up' waste.

“Volunteering for a P.U.P.P.Y event is a great way to participate in keeping your community clean and healthy,” says McCulley. “Calgarians can also organize a community clean-up of their favourite off-leash area or park by registering for a green project through Parks.”

All P.U.P.P.Y. events take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the following dates:
