Charges Upgraded in Stabbing Incident

A man that was stabbed earlier this summer has died as a result of his injuries and charges in the case have been upgraded.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., on Thursday, July 9, 2015, police were alerted to a fight involving several individuals on the Stampede Midway. Two individuals were found with stab wounds. One was taken to Foothills Medical Centre in critical condition and the other was taken to Rockyview Hospital where he was treated and released.

Following a foot chase leading off Stampede Grounds, a third person was found with stab wounds and was also taken to hospital. 

The third individual found wounded is believed to be responsible for stabbing the individual that originally was in critical condition and has since died as a result of their injuries.

The investigation has revealed the fight occurred between two groups of people who were familiar with each other.

The victim has been identified as Zakariya Mohamed ABDOW, 25, of Calgary. He died as a result of a stabbing.

This case is considered a homicide. To date, there have been 27 homicides in Calgary in 2015.

Rinato TOY, 20, of Calgary, was originally charged with one count of aggravated  assault, one count of obstruction of justice and two counts of breaching a court order. TOY appeared in court this morning, Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, where his charges were upgraded to manslaughter.
