Charges in Weapons Incident

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man in relation to a weapons incident in the city’s southwest earlier in the week.

At around noon on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, a man left his residence in the 12,000 block of 17 Street S.W. and approached another residence in the area. The residents heard a commotion outside and opened their door to see what was going on. The man allegedly assaulted the resident while yelling obscenities.

The man then returned to his own residence where he allegedly obtained a firearm and left the building. While in the parking lot he was confronted by another witness. The man then assaulted the witness and a struggle ensued in which the witness was able to disarm the man and detain him with the assistance of other passersby, who also called police.

The witness and the suspect were both transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Jonah Lee CHENIER, 24, of Calgary, has been charged with pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault, assault with a weapon, break and enter with intent and theft under $5,000.

He will next appear in court today, Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013.
