Calgary Police Dragon Boat Team Hosts Youth Ringette Team

The Calgary Police Service’s (CPS) women’s dragon boat team, Bad Buoys, is hosting a youth ringette team for a night on the Glenmore Reservoir. The team, which is made up of CPS members ranking from Constable to Inspector, has been competing for the past five years in international competitions.

The Bad Buoys are a great representation of the collaborative efforts that are required in a successful team environment, whether it be in sport or on the job. Together, officers on the team have over 300 years of experience in policing.

By getting to know the young ringette teammates, members of the Service hope to create interest in policing as a career for the young girls. This opportunity also allows our members to further develop their relationships in the community.

CPS Inspector Nancy Farmer has been involved on the team since inception in 2009. “This is about the mentorship of young woman in our community, to generate interest in a sport and to show them that they can achieve anything they put their minds to…and hopefully we can recruit some future policewoman,” says Insp. Farmer. “Strength doesn’t come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t. Our team has proven that, our first World Police and Fire Games (WPFG) we achieved gold, and we are heading back to win gold again in Fairfax in 2015.”

The ringette team will get to interact with the officers both on and off the water by taking part in a typical dragon boat training session. CPS is committed to fostering strong relationships in the community, and setting positive examples for children and youth throughout the city.
