Calgary Police Commission Chair steps aside

After four years as the head of the Calgary Police Commission, Mike Shaikh announced at the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Commission that he is stepping down as Chair, effective October 31, 2013.

Mike Shaikh was appointed to the Calgary Police Commission in November 2005 and was elected to his first term as Chair at the November 2009 CPC Organizational Meeting.  Prior to his election as Chair, he served as Vice-Chair of the Commission and Chair of the Finance & Audit Committee.

During his tenure, Mr. Shaikh represented the Calgary Police Commission at a variety of functions and was involved in various police oversight organizations, including serving as a director of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) and board member of the Canadian Association of Police Boards.

Mr. Shaikh brought a wealth of experience to his role as Commission Chair. His background as a chartered accountant and experience in corporate governance helped to foster effective and efficient policing.  Of all of the accomplishments of the Commission during his term, Mr. Shaikh highlighted three of which he is most proud: the establishment of the Calgary Police foundation, the commencement of the CPS Cadet program and his dedication to ensuring a cohesive working relationship with City Council.

Citing the recent flood, Mr. Shaikh drew attention to the personification of ‘community policing’ by the men and women at the Calgary Police Service who demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the citizens of Calgary, and protection of property.

Mr. Shaikh stated, “He is leaving the CPS in good hands with Chief Hanson and he firmly believes both the Service and the Commission are well positioned to serve the citizens of Calgary for years to come.”

The Calgary Police Commission provides civilian oversight to the Calgary Police Service. Under the Police Act the Calgary Police Commission establishes policies to provide for efficient and effective policing; in consultation with the chief of police, allocates funds provided by City Council; and monitors the complaint process.
