CALGARY POLICE COMMISSION APPOINTS INTERIM CHIEF

CALGARY, March 09, 2015 - The Calgary Police Commission is pleased to announce that Superintendent Paul Cook, a 25 year veteran of the CPS, will assume the role of Interim Chief effective Friday, March 13, 2015 when Chief Hanson retires.

Superintendent Cook has served in nearly every area of the CPS.  Specifically, he has served as a patrol sergeant, and later, as a District inspector.  He has spent nearly half his career in the support section working in multiple units and moving through the ranks from Constable to Commander.  Superintendent Cook is a certified hostage negotiator, certified as a national level 2 incident commander, has undertaken extensive advanced police training, and has served in senior multi-agency positions.  He is a recipient of both the Distinguished Service Award (2004) and the Exemplary Service Medal (2010).  More recently, Superintendent Cook served as the Executive Officer for Chief Hanson.

“I am delighted with the appointment of Paul Cook to Interim Chief,” said Rodney Fong, Calgary Police Commission Chair.  “He knows how the executive suite works, he is connected to the members, and he is an exceptionally accomplished senior officer and respected leader.”

Superintendent Cook will serve as Interim Chief until the Calgary Police Commission appoints a new Chief.  Details of a search process are currently being coordinated.

The interim Chief will be available for comments on March 13, 2015.
