Bikes seized in downtown operation

As part of a two-month investigation into the theft of bicycles in the downtown core, police have recovered over 50 bikes and laid charges against 17 people.

The operation, run predominantly over the summer months by the District One Mountain Bike Unit, District Operations Team (DOT), Beat Unit and patrol officers, focused on the downtown core and the Beltline, two areas that witnessed a significant increase in bicycle thefts following the floods.

The bicycles stolen and recovered ranged in value, however, some were worth as much as $5,000.

Police believe that many bicycle thefts go unreported. As such, they currently have approximately 250 bicycles that have been recovered from across the entire city that they have not been able to return to the rightful owners.
