Assault victim dies in hospital

A man who was the victim of an alleged assault this weekend has died in hospital.
 
At approximately 1:45 a.m., on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, police were called to reports of an assault in a residence in the 0 to 100 block of Royal Oak Drive N.W.
 
A 65-year-old man was transported from the scene in critical condition. He was pronounced deceased late yesterday, Monday, Jan. 7, 2013.
 
An autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon, Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013.
 
The deceased has been identified as Alexander POTOROKA, 65, from Calgary.  
 
Shaun Peter DESAUTELS, 42, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with uttering threats and aggravated assault.
 
The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit will be consulting with the Crown regarding upgraded charges in this case.
 
DESAUTELS next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.
 
The accused and the victim were residing in the residence where the offence took place. The deceased owned the property and rented a room to the accused.
 
This is the second homicide in Calgary of 2013.
