Arrests made in stolen vehicle incident

The Calgary Police Service has charged one man in relation to several incidents that took place last week.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, a woman was in her vehicle in the parking lot of Market Mall when she was approached by an unknown male. The man opened the driver's side door and pointed a gun at the woman, and ordered her out of the vehicle.

The male fled the scene in the victim's silver 2003 Chevrolet Venture van, which held the victim’s purse and identification. A stolen red Ford Taurus car, believed to be working in tandem with the offender, fled the scene as well. No one was injured during the incident.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, a stolen red Ford Taurus was recovered in the 0 to 100 block of Silverado Skies Drive S.W. The car is believed to have been involved in the carjacking the previous evening.

Later that afternoon, officers responded to an ATM break in call at the BMO located at 19369 Sheriff King Street S.W. The carjacking victim’s vehicle registration was discovered on scene.

On Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at approximately 2 a.m., officers noted a Chevrolet Venture van with front-end damage pulled over in the intersection of Rocky Ridge Road and Royal Oak Drive N.W. Police conducted a traffic stop, which upon further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been stolen and matched the description of the vehicle taken in Friday’s carjacking. A man at the scene was taken into custody.

The licence plate had been switched and the victim’s original licence plate – BHH 5604 – remains outstanding.

Police have charged Ryan John WILSON, 36, of Calgary, with two counts of possession of stolen property, and one count of possession of drugs. He was released on a promise to appear and was scheduled to appear in court today.

Later that same day, a man committed a theft at a liquor store located at 1085 Falconridge Drive N.E. During the theft, he assaulted a clerk who tried to prevent his escape from the store. Police contained the scene and apprehended the suspect who had been hiding in the back seat of an unlocked vehicle in the area. Ryan John WILSON has been charged with one count each of theft, assault with intent to resist arrest, possession of stolen property, and two counts of breach of release conditions.

Information learned throughout this investigation led police to a residence in the 200 block of 20 Avenue N.E. On Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at approximately 4:15 p.m., police saw an individual leaving a motorhome behind the residence. Police attempted to arrest the man near the motorhome, however he fled, dropping a handgun along the way. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Michael Adam MATCHETT, 30, of Calgary, is charged with one count each of possession of a handgun dangerous to the public, carrying a concealed handgun, and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, in relation to Wednesday’s incident. He will next appear in court on November 13, 2015.

Police entered the motorhome and took two additional individuals into custody. Both were interviewed and one was charged. Ryan HAWKE, 39, of Calgary, was arrested on unrelated warrants.

At this point no charges have been laid in relation to the carjacking at Market Mall. However, police continue to investigate and further charges are anticipated.
