Two-alarm fire in the city's SW - update

The Calgary Fire Department is still on scene at the 300 block of Southampton Drive SW. Crews continue to monitor and to put out hot spots associated with an earlier two-alarm fire. 

 

Earlier this afternoon, crews were called out to reports of a fire at a three-storey apartment building. Upon arrival, they were met with black smoke and intense heat. Crews were able to conduct a primary search in most areas of the building and no occupants were found. Most residents of the affected building self evacuated while Calgary Police Service assisted with evacuating residents of adjacent buildings as a precautionary measure. The third floor of the building received significant damage and there has been a partial collapse of the structure. No injuries were reported, however because of the intense heat several firefighters were assessed by EMS. 

 

Residents of the affected building will not be allowed to re-entry this evening. The Calgary Emergency Agency is on-scene to assist with displaced residents.

 

Elbow Drive is closed in both directions from Anderson Road to Southampton Drive SW. Traffic is being redirected to 14th Street or Macloed Trail.

 

The fire is currently under investigation. There is no damage estimate at this time.

 

In addition to this incident, Fire crews also fought another two-alarm fire this afternoon in the area of 5th Street and 13th Ave NE. The fire occurred at a single-family dwelling. No one was home at the time.
