Calgary Fire Department Responds to Montgomery Garage Fire
Just before 10:00am, fire crews responded to the 2300 block of Mackay Road NW for a structure fire. Crews arrived to find heavy flames and smoke coming from a detached garage at the rear of a single-story residential property. Firefighters stretched a high-volume hose line into the alley and began knocking down the fire in the garage. A second hose line was stretched into the back yard to prevent the spread of fire to the home. Occupants from the neighbouring homes had all self-exited and no injuries were reported.
The home was considered vacant, with windows and doorways boarded up and utilities previously disconnected. The fire was contained to the garage and stopped from spreading to the home and neighbouring homes. The garage sustained severe structural damage.
A fire investigator attended the scene, and the cause remains under investigation. A fire watch crew has been assigned to monitor conditions.
The Calgary Fire Department is part of the Coordinated Safety Response Team (CSRT), working with agencies such as the Calgary Police Service, Alberta Health Services and other City services to address vacant and problem properties that may pose safety risks to occupants, neighbouring properties and the surrounding community. By bringing multiple agencies together, the team works to address complex safety concerns and reduce community risk.
Calgarians who are concerned about a vacant or problem property can report their concerns through Calgary 311. When making a report, provide the property address or location, a description of the concern, when the issue was observed and photos, if they can be taken safely. This information helps City staff assess the concern and direct it to the appropriate service.
Do not enter a property or put yourself at risk to gather information. If there is an emergency or immediate threat to life or safety, call 911.
