Calgary Fire Department crews continue to work around the clock alongside industrial firefighters and heavy-equipment operators to manage the ongoing fire at a southeast Calgary landfill

Crews are applying water, smothering burning material with soil and using heavy equipment to reach fires buried deep within the landfill. Heavy equipment was also used yesterday and overnight to improve road access and site conditions, allowing crews to move equipment more effectively and to reach affected areas.

Landfill fires are complex and can take considerable time to fully extinguish because of the volume and variety of materials involved. We appreciate the patience of Calgarians as crews work to safely resolve this incident.

The Government of Alberta continues to monitor air quality. Anyone with health-related concerns should contact Health Link at 811.
