Fire Department responds to two Structure fires within an hour.

Firefighters were kept busy early this morning responding to two stucture fires within an hour. The first call was received just after 04:30 am for a house fire on Brookpark Drive SW. First arriving crews found a fire extending up the side of a single family home. The fire had started on the exterior and climbed the wall entering the attic space. The home owner. an adult male had heard the fire outside his bedroom window and called 911 for help. The fire was confined to the attic and quickly brought under control. The lone occupant was not injured. It was fortunate that he had heard the fire and called for help because smoke had not entered the living space of the home and detectors were not activated. This is a reminder that a smoke detector in the attic can help save lives with early detection.

The second fire on Brookpark Boulevard SW. summonded the Fire Department after alarms were activated by a smoke detector in the Condominium complex. This fire a few short blocks from the first also started on the exterior of the building. A ground floor deck at the rear of the building had caught fire and when the resident opend the patio door smoke entered triggering the alarm. As people began evacuating the building, Firefighters arrived and quickly located the fire and extinguished it. In this case patio furniture, decking and the siding were damaged. Fire crews ventilated the stucture to remove smoke. Occupants were able to return to their units after a short time. No injuries were reported. Investigators are on scene to pinpiont the cause of the fire. At this time there is nothing linking the two fires and neither  seem suspicious.
