Calgary Fire Department responds to two structure fires on the morning of July 27, 2021
At approximately 09:00 this morning, Calgary 911 Call Centre began receiving multiple calls, reporting a fire in a commercial business located in the 5700 block of 3rd Street SW. Calgary Fire Department crews were quickly dispatched and upon arrival reported large volumes of smoke and flames eminating from the front of the business. Initial fire crews made an aggressive interior attack on the fire, as there were reports of a possible occupant within the business. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, but smoke had spread throughout the three story building. The lone occupant of the business was able to self-evacuate just prior to the arrival of fire crews. The occupant was checked by Alberta Health Services on scene and transported to hospital with minor smoke inhalation. Unfortunately, two cats that were also in the business succumbed to the heat, smoke and flames. Investigators are on scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. If anyone has photos or videos of this fire, prior to the arrival of Calgary Fire Department members, please send them to PIOfire@calgary.ca.
Just over 2 hours later, at approximately 11:30 am July 27, 2021, fire crews were dispatched to a second structure fire in the 1300 block of 12th Ave SW. Upon arrival at this scene, fire crews reported smoke showing and called a working fire. Again, firefighters began an aggressive interior attack and quickly extinguished the fire. Investigators are currently on scene of this fire as well and would like to remind all Calgarians to be aware of the risks of storing flammable or combustible materials in close proximity to any heat source, such as a boiler or furnace.
Both of these fire are reminders of the importance of working smoke alarms on all levels of your home and / or business.
