Calgary Fire Department responds to possible explosion in down town building

At approximately 10:15 this morning, the Calgary Fire Department responded to the 600 block of 5th Avenue S.W. for reports of a possible explosion. On arrival, fire crews discovered an electrical problem in the mechanical room on the 6th floor of the high rise building. A loud sound had been heard coming from that room which was initially thought to be an explosion. An astute employee in the building closed the door to the mechanical room and pulled the fire alarm. Approximately 700 people were evacuated from the building. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident. The building is currently on back-up power by generator to maintain fire and life safety systems as well as elevator service. Some employees may not be returning to work as the air conditioning in the building has been affected.
