Calgary Fire Department Aquatics Team recues two rafters near Louise Bridge

At approximately 3:15 this afternoon, 911 received reports of a raft upside down in the river after striking a bridge abutment, throwing three people in the water. The Aquatics Rescue Team quickly launched and found 2 people stranded on a gravel bank in the middle of the Bow River downstream if the Louise Bridge. The third person had made it safely to shore. Once the Aquatics Team returned the two people back to shore, firefighters retrieved their rafting equipment for them. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident. All three rafters were wearing personal floatation devices.

 

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind Bow River users that they will need to familiarize themselves with the altered river channels as previous river knowledge may no longer be relevant. Substantial changes in the river will necessitate the need and ability to react quickly in order to navigate hazards. Use caution in and around Harvie Passage and please use the portage on ‘River Right’ to exit the water as river channels have dramatically changed in this area.

 

Due to very dangerous conditions created by a variety of debris, the Vessel Operation Restriction enacted by the Calgary Police Service will remain in place for the Elbow River. Boating remains prohibited on this river within the city limits at this time.

 

It is safest to stay away from river banks and avoid going in or near the water, especially with children and pets. Should you choose to use the Bow River, please exercise extreme caution and take the time to understand and plan for the risks.
