Calgary fire crews fight early morning garage fire in Lake Bonavista

Just after 6:00 a.m. on Thursday March 21, 9-1-1 received a call from a neighbour reporting a fire in the garage of a house on Lake Mead Crescent in south east Calgary. Fire crews having just cleared from another incident, arrived on scene quickly. On their arrival, smoke and flames were showing from the attached garage.

Firefighters did a quick knock down of the flames which had spread to both vehicles. Fire crews successfully contained the fire to the garage. Some smoke and heat did however make its way into the residence. A miniature Schnauzer who was home alone at the time was rescued prior to CFD arrival by the neighbour who was also the caller to 9-1-1.

No injuries were reported as a result of this fire and working smoke alarms were present in the house and had activated as intended.

Damage to the garage and the two vehicles is significant with some minor smoke and heat damage to rest of the house. A fire investigator attended the scene and early indications of a cause appear to point to an electrical failure inside the garage.

Working smoke alarms can help save lives. For information on fire safety and fire prevention, please visit www.calgary.ca/fire
